COP28: Key takeaways
What were the outcomes of COP28 and how does the circular economy systems transition fit in?

The circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. is transformational and a means of addressing climate change. Nature functions in a circular way — and this could and should be emulated in our economic system in order to tackle systemic challenges such as the climate crisis. This COP28 high-level side-event reflected on examples of success and best practice from the research-policy space and the implementation experiences of several countries including Argentina, India, and Peru, as well as the European Commission. The event was organised by PAGE, a UN initiative bringing together five UN agencies (UNEP, ILO, UNDP, UNIDO, and UNITAR) together with UNESCWA, UNECE and UN-OHRLLS. It was moderated by our Climate Lead, Miranda Schnitger.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation works to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. We develop and promote the idea of a circular economy, and work with business, academia, policymakers, and institutions to mobilise systems solutions at scale, globally.
