Inside the Circular Economy
We are running an interactive global online seven-week learning programme
The Change for Climate lesson plan is designed to inspire and mobilise young Africans (aged 13-18) around the concept of the circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. — an economic model that encourages effective ways of designing, making, and using things that can help us address big challenges like climate change.
Looking at examples of real people making real changes in the way that we work and live, this resource takes you on a journey into the hearts and minds of entrepreneurs and innovators shaping the future of Africa, using circular economy ideas and principles.
This is a one hour lesson plan for educators to use in the classroom, that provides an introduction to the circular economy in Africa.
This course has been developed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with the African Leadership University
This is a 60 minute lesson plan with an accompanying design challenge, which covers:
Introduction to the concept of the circular economy and how it is developing in Africa
Examples of circular economy activity in Africa: Hya Bioplastics, Style Rotate, #FreetowntheTreeTown
The design challenge has been developed to put students’ creativity and circular economy understanding to the test. Here’s the brief:
Create/design a circular economy solution to a climate-related issue affecting your local community.
The challenge can be completed by individuals or in groups (of up to 5 people). Participants must be 13-18 years old and living or studying in Africa. The deadline for submission is Feb 28, 2023.
Are there prizes?
Yes, all participants will receive a certificate of completion. We will select a winner (either individual or group submission) who will receive a private lesson on design thinking with design consultant Ridwhana Shaik (who features in the course interviews) and have the opportunity to showcase their designed solution on our blog.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation works to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. We develop and promote the idea of a circular economy, and work with business, academia, policymakers, and institutions to mobilise systems solutions at scale, globally.
